Dumb Money Launderer

September 8, 2006

Look at this gem of news. This jeweler claim he made $10,670 in 2004, however he sells Jacob & Co. watches which retail for $11,000

[via jsonline.com]

The owner of Wauwatosa jewelry store has been charged with money
laundering by selling expensive merchandise to drug dealers for cash,
according to a federal criminal complaint.
The jeweler, Harry C. Glinberg, 36, of Mequon, also seriously
underreported his income to the IRS saying his business netted just
$10,670 in 2004, according to an affidavit attached to the complaint.
Harry C. Glinberg Jewelers, 2675 N. Mayfair Road, is the official
dealer in the Milwaukee area for Jacob & Co. watches, which retail
for $11,000, according to the affidavit of IRS Special Agent Park J.
Jones. Glinberg has been known to sell diamond-encrusted watches for
$30,000 and counts professional athletes among his clients, the
affidavit states.
Glinberg was arrested last week and is free on a signature bond. On
Thursday, he filed a notice waiving his right to a preliminary hearing.
Glinberg is the second area jeweler to be charged with money laundering
in the Eastern District of Wisconsin in recent years. Gino Pak,
operator of Pak’s World Jewelers on Wisconsin Ave. downtown, pleaded
guilty to a lesser charge in May and is awaiting sentencing. When Pak’s
legal troubles started at the end of 2000, drug dealers and others with
illegal income started shopping at Glinberg’s store instead, the
affidavit says.
In 2002, agents from the Criminal Investigation Division of the IRS
subpoenaed Glinberg’s business records “documenting the sale of jewelry
to at least two indicted drug dealers from the Milwaukee area,” the
affidavit says. At that time, the agents reminded Glinberg that he must
complete federal forms for cash transactions over $10,000, the
affidavit says. Federal law requires the forms to be filled out so the
IRS and law enforcement agencies can keep track of people who deal in
large sums of cash. Lying on the form and collecting lesser sums of
money in separate transactions to avoid filling it out are both federal
felonies. Glinberg has filed just one of the forms since he opened his
business in 1998, according to the affidavit, though several
cooperating witnesses and defendants turned over jewelry worth more
than $10,000 to the IRS, admitting they had purchased it from Glinberg
with the proceeds of illegal drug sales.
An undercover IRS agent posing as a drug dealer paid for a watch with
$9,000 in cash and a $9,500 cashier’s check after being advised by
Glinberg to do so in order to avoid filling out the IRS form, the
affidavit says. Glinberg also wrote a fake name on the receipt, the
affidavit says. According to the affidavit, Glinberg lives in a
$770,000 home in the Gazebo Hills neighborhood of Mequon and has a
Hummer, a Honda Odyssey, a camper and a 1997 Cadillac DeVille.
According to an IRS calculation, his 2005 monthly expenditures exceed
his reported income by $578 — not counting personal living expenses
such as food, utilities and the costs of raising two children.
